SOUTHEASTERN TOURNAMENTS HELD IN SEPTEMBER 2002
A rain filled weekend almost spoiled the Southeastern
USTA Tennis Championships held on September 13-15, 2002
in Durham. Fortunately, indoor courts saved the event, and
what an event! Some great tennis was played and enjoyed.
The winners are as follows:
Men’s Open Singles Winner: Joel Adi, Raleigh and Finalist:
Malik Daniels, Raleigh; Men’s 35 Singles Winner: Leslie
McIver, Charlotte and Finalist: Curtis D. Lawson, Durham;
Men’s 35 Doubles: Winners: Peter Glud, Greensboro
and Kevin Little, Summerfield and Finalists: John McLean
and Howard Fitts, both of Durham; Men’s 45 Singles
Winner: Larry Campbell, Durham; and Finalist: Charles Bridges,
Raleigh; and Consolations Winner: Don Aikins, Durham; Men’s
45 Doubles Winners: Peter Glud and Kevin Little; Finalist
Larry Campbell and Douglas Grano, both of Durham; Women’s
35 Doubles Winners: Lynise DeVance, Raleigh and B. Rogers,
Cary; Anna McLean, Durham and Glenda Artis, Chapel Hill;
and Open Mixed Doubles: Anjanette McIlwain, Faytteville
and Malik Daniels; and Finalists: Lynise DeVance and Destry
Jordan, Durham.
The following weekend, September 21-22, 2002 Southeastern
Tennis ATA Championship was held at Rock Quarry Tennis
Courts by the Southeastern Tennis Organization. Over 55
participants from Maryland, Connecticut, Washington, Virginia,
and North Carolina participated in the event. Hampton
University won the college team trophy.
