DOCTA OPEN JR. CHALLENGE

The Durham-Orange Community Tennis Association (DOCTA) held its annual local tennis tournament, the DOCTA Open Jr. Tennis Challenge, at the Rock Quarry Tennis Courts in Durham on August 20-22, 2004. What an exciting weekend of great junior tennis! Participants from 16 North Carolina cities competed in one of Durham’s best junior tournaments.

Top junior champions, runner ups, and consolation winners received trophies during the event as follows: Boys’ 18 Singles (Finals): Quincey Hawley, Oxford def. Trevor Ostbye, Chapel Hill 7-5, 6-4; Boys’ 18 Singles Consolation (Finals): Tejac Petty, Oxford def. Dvir Kafri, Carrboro 6-4, 6-2; Boys’ 16 Singles (Finals): Andrew Rogers, Roxboro def. Lawrence Le, Raleigh 6-4, 6-1; Boys’ 14 Singles (Finals): Christopher Mauch, Durham def. Zachary Sarnoff, Cary 7-6(3), 2-6, 1-0; Boys 14 Singles Consolation (Finals): Jonathan Fedorkowicz, Greensboro def. Peter Gudaitis, Durham 6-4, 6-1; Boys’ 12 Singles (Finals): Hartland Jones, Raleigh def. Adrian Ostbye, Chapel Hill 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5); Boys’ 12 Singles Consolation (Finals): Zack Czajkowski, Chapel Hill def. Tyler Pyle, Durham 6-1, 6-2; Girls’ 18 Singles Round Robin Champion: Caroline Mauch, Durham; Runner Up: Carrie Freeman, Durham; Consolation Winner: Lindsey Trigdon, Cary; Girls’ 16 Singles (Final): Tori Helpingstine, Chapel Hill def. Brooke Hoover, Durham 6-4, 6-3; Girls’ 16 Consolation Winner: Siobhan Murkerji, Raleigh def. Samantha Stamler, Chapel Hill 6-1, 6-1; Girls’ 14 Singles (Final): Sruthi Cherkur, Jamestown def. THE D.O.C.T.A. is excited about the growth of tennis in the Durham/Orange County Community as two local Durham tennis leagues—the Women’s 4.0 and Senior Women’s 4.5 teams-- head to the national championships; middle/high school tennis teams kicks off a new year of competition; junior and adult development continue to grow, and local public tennis courts are still filled with tennis enthusiasts who enjoy the sport.
