Orange
High School Tennis Courts Complete and Ceremony
Planned!
The
Orange High School Tennis Courts and lighting are
now complete. The Orange County Schools and Orange
Recreation and Parks will host a Ribbon
Cutting Ceremony on June 20, 2008 at 4 pm at
the tennis courts (off Holman Road). Please plan
to attend this historic event that marks the end
of a 3-year advocacy effort by the community to
re-surface courts that were almost 20 years old.
Local Orange County Commissioners Michael Nelson
and Alice Gordon will be on hand to support the
event along with the Superintendent, Patrick Rhodes
for the ribbon cutting. Ramsey Smith, Former Duke
All-American and professional tennis player and
currently the Men's Assistant Tennis Coach at Duke
University along with Britton Webb, former Orange
High School Tennis Standout and currently attending
Appalachian State University will participate in
a exhibition match.
Orange
High School Tennis Courts were the only public courts
open to the community; and the new facility creates
great opportunity for youth and adult play and expanding
tennis programming in the community to maximize
the use of the facility. The public is invited to
attend this wonderful event to share how important
tennis is to the Hillsborough community.
Also,
please be sure to thank the Orange County School
Board, Orange County Commissioners and the Orange
County Recreation and Parks through emails and phone
calls for the awesome tennis facility!

DOCTA GOALS
1.Promoting
tennis as a viable sport for physical fitness and
good health.
2.Developing
junior players to participate in middle school tennis;
and increasing the number of high school players
with skill and ability to play competitive tennis
as a result of middle school play. Promote more
home school and junior league participation.
3.Increasing
the number of minority youth and adults playing
tennis; and participating in a leadership role in
the sport.
4.Increasing
the number of 50+ participants in tennis in our
community;
5.
Providing funding for organizations and others to
promote and develop tennis programming for youth
and adults, specifically in areas were tennis programming
is non-existent.
6.Increasing
and developing positive relations among private
and public tennis organizations to create collaboration
in community programs.
7.Promoting the DOCTA within the community as a
resource to tennis participants, parents, public
and private organizations, and newcomers in the
sport of tennis.
8.Supporting
area community projects to promote and encourage
tennis play, such as the Carrboro Parks Backboard
Project; efforts toward indoor tennis courts; out-of-state
high school student college tours, Stay Fit and
Healthy Tennis Program, etc.
We
had wonderful volunteer participation in 2006. To
grow tennis in Durham and Orange County, we must
grow by promoting tennis, developing and mentoring
new tennis players, and encouraging all to play
league, participate in tournaments, and most importantly
volunteer with your local association, parks and
recreation, private or public club. Volunteers are
needed to help DOCTA and the tennis community to
grow. Thank you.
