DOCTA OPEN JUNIOR CHALLENGE 2002

The Durham-Orange Community Tennis Association hosted the Third Annual Open Junior Tennis Challenge on August 16-18, 2002 at the Rock Quarry Tennis Courts in Durham. Juniors ages 10 to 18 participated in this exciting event. This year’s tournament marked a 29 percent increase in junior participation with 155 participants from 26 cites in North Carolina. The DOCTA Challenge brought out 62 North Carolina siblings; and 7 tennis associations, clubs or schools with juniors participating in individual junior competition including: Carrington Middle School, Fort Bragg Tennis Association, Durham-Orange Community Tennis Association, UNC Athletic Farm, Greenville Tennis Association, Raleigh Racquet Club, Fayetteville Tennis Association.

The Singles Event winners, finalists, and consolation winners in the DOCTA Open Junior Challenge for 2002 are as follows: Boys’ 12 Singles Winner: Pierce Hoover, Durham; Finalist: Timmy Bayus, Chapel Hill; Consolations winner: William Rollison, Raleigh; Girls’ 12 Singles Winners: Tess Darling, Chapel Hill; Finalist; Varice Love, Fayetteville; Consolations Winner: Aleah Marrow, Durham; Boys’ 14 Singles Winner: Andrew Malizia, Chapel Hill; Finalist: Jeremy Burchett, Durham; Consolations Winner: Hamilton Engram: Winston-Salem; Girls’ 14 Singles Winner: Heather Prior, Raleigh; Finalist: Crystal Rayl, Raleigh; Consolations Winner: Ashley Rogers, Cary; Boys 16s’ Singles Winner: James Stewart, Raleigh; Finalist: Wowie Mayer, Durham; Consolations Winner: Corey Monk, Fayetteville; Girls’ 16 Singles Winner: Kelly Will, Holly Springs; Finalist: Winnie Quick, Greensboro; Consolations Winner: Kate Weissler, Chapel Hill; and Boys 18s’ Singles Winner: Michael Kociecki, Raleigh; Finalist: Nelson Bunn, Raleigh; Consolations Winner: Ben Boyer, Raleigh. The Doubles Event Winners were: Boys 12s Winners: W. Rollinson and J. Senter Raleigh; Finalist: W. Schmitz and C. Mauch, both of Durham; Boys 14s Winners: P. Hoover and A. Malizia and Finalists: A. Jacobs and W. Spivey, both of Raleigh; Boys 16s’: W. Mayer and R. Paul, Chapel Hill and G. Pescetto and J. Stephenson, both of Fayetteville; Girls 12s Winners: J. Allen and M. Williams, both of Raleigh; Girls 14s Winner: C. Mauch and C. Paulson, both of Durham; Finalist: C. McLean, Durham and A. Rogers; and Girls’ 16: E. Gordon and P. Litchfield, both of Cary; and Finalists C. Hickman and C. Lee, both of Greenville.
