SOUTHEASTERN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
DURHAM, NC
The Southeastern Tennis Championships was held September
15-17, 2005 at Rock Quarry Tennis Courts in Durham, NC.
Sponsored by the Durham-Orange Community Tennis Association,
the sanctioned event brought out some great tennis players
and was truly exciting for spectators in the area.
The Men’s Open Singles Finals featured a great
competition between Australian and Nigerian college tennis
players. Kabiru Ibrahim of Nigeria and a college senior
at Shaw University in Raleigh defeated Adrian Baluyot
of Australia and a college junior at Barton College in
Wilson in a thrilling match 6-2, 6-3. The stroke ability
of these players was at the professional level of play.
Both won 3 matches prior to reaching the finals.
Mark Timmons of Raleigh won the Open Singles Consolation.
The Men’s Open Doubles was highlighted by local
Durham league 5.0/5.5 players Ben Cooke and Brock Parker
who defeated the father and son team of Andrew Stewart
of Raleigh and Michael Stewart of California in the finals
6-3, 6-1. Lauren Barry of Raleigh, a college student at
NC State University, Raleigh won the Women’s Open
Singles in a round robin. Her sister Allison was runner
up. Christina McLean won consolations.

Women’s Open Doubles – Lauren and Allison
Barry both of Raleigh defeated Phyllis Little and Christina
McLean both of Durham: 6-0, 6-1
