DOCTA
TENNIS CARNIVAL SHINES
The
Saturday morning showers cleared the sky for a beautiful
sunshine filled day over the Annual Tennis Carnival of the
Durham-Orange Community Tennis Association kicking off Tennis
Month on May 20th. Approximately 100 participants and volunteers
at the event; children and adults of all ages, enjoyed tennis
games and drills, the Hoppy Times moon bounce, lots of food
and prizes.
The carnival was a great experience for kids who have never
picked up a tennis racket said John McLean, tennis instructor
and board chair of DOCTA. The excitement and smiles of children
and adults filled the air as they arrived and departed the
park.
The mission of DOCTA is to encourage and promote tennis
in Durham and Orange Counties. We want to reach out to children
and adults to promote tennis as a great physical activity
sport that can help to reduce the risk of high blood pressure/hypertension,
cholesterol, diabetes and obesity said Anna Mercer-McLean,
Program Director of the Stay Fit and Healthy Tennis Program
developed under the umbrella of DOCTA. For more information
on this program, individual and group lessons/clinics beginning
on June 1, 2006, and other programs funded or managed by
the organization, please call (919) 547-4354.
Also, DOCTA is calling on all individuals/couples to sign
up for Mixed Doubles Leagues beginning June 12. The deadline
for registration and starting new teams is June 1st. If
you wish to participate contact Durham Parks and Recreation
at 560-4355.
